estonia
day 7
We woke up early to walk to the Megastar ferry terminal to make the 2-hour voyage across the Baltic Sea to Tallinn, Estonia. Though we knew it would be a bit rushed and another full day, we were excited to visit this country! The walk wasn’t as safe as we hoped because areas were void of sidewalks, but we made it.
Unfortunately, we did not make it in time. Read the fine print on your ticket for how early you need to be there prior to the ferry departure – they mean it and draw a hard line. We thought we were there plenty early, but were five minutes past the deadline, and they refused to let us in. We had to wait a couple hours for the next boat to depart…and we were not alone in this mistake.
On a more positive note, for our inconvenience, they gave us dinner tickets for the ride home, which ended up being quite nice at the end of our long day. We were also provided a map of Estonia with many tourist spots highlighted, so while we waited for the next ferry, we mapped our walking path (which proved to be easy to navigate upon arriving).
Estonia is rich in history with churches, museums and castles. Our day exploring what we could on foot was magical. We were in awe of the old buildings, cute shops, and the bakeries, oh the bakeries!
It was a good thing we walked so much, because we just shopped and ate our way through the day! I think most of us had our cameras always primed and ready because there was so much beauty to capture. We were grateful for the time spent here and could have stayed longer. If you have the opportunity, visit Estonia!
Overall, we loved our trip to Finland and Estonia. It really was an ideal late-winter, family-friendly destination and we would do it all over again. Since we were able to enjoy the beauty of all the frozen lakes and winter activities, we now desire to come back and adventure in the summer. We can imagine the scenery looks vastly different in summertime with the 180,000+ lakes uncovered!
